SIERRA BLANCA, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — Two children are dead after an SUV rolled over on Thursday afternoon on I-10 near Sierra Blanca.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, a 3-month old baby from El Paso and a 10-year-old girl from Florida died after the 2003 GMC Envoy they were traveling in veered off the road, hit the cable barrier in the middle and rolled over multiple times.

Texas DPS said it happened at around 3:25 p.m. near mile marker 101, which is close to the Sierra Blanca Border Patrol checkpoint.

The driver of the GMC SUV, a 29-year-old woman from El Paso, was reportedly seriously injured and was airlifted taken to the University Medical Center.

Authorities said the 3-month-old baby was pronounced dead on the scene, while the 10-year-old girl died from her injuries at the Culberson County Hospital.

Texas DPS said the crash remains under investigation.

“We have to look at everything, we have to look at the tires, we have to look at something that malfunctioned or it could’ve been something as simple as: maybe the driver falling asleep,” said Texas DPS Sergeant Eliot Torres while speaking with KINT.
