Fort Worth Happenings  

The Dock Bookshop- 6637 Meadowbrook Drive Fort Worth Texas 76112-  

The Dock Bookshop is a black-owned bookstore located about 13 minutes from Texas Wesleyan University. On Martin Luther King Jr. Day (MLK Day), they will be hosting an event from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. for the Fort Worth community.   

At 3 p.m. there will be a designated family time dedicated to stories, arts and crafts, activities, refreshments and film. At 5 p.m. there will be a community conversation titled, “Where Do We Go from Here?”—a thought-provoking discussion inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and the ongoing civil rights struggle.  

The Dock Bookstore will also host an open mic night in celebration of MLK day from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 20.  

Cowboys of Color Rodeo- Dickies Arena-  

In lieu of Fort Worth’s rodeo season, the Cowboys of Color rodeo has been an event that highlights and celebrates the life of Martin Luther King since 2010 and is the largest multicultural rodeo in the world.  

Beginning at 2 p.m. on MLK Day, this is a traditional rodeo with events such as bull riding and calf roping. The carnival midway will also be open for MLK Day from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. with rides, games, prizes and food.  

Greater Fort Worth Martin Luther King Jr.  Holiday Committee Parade and Rally–  

The downtown Fort Worth parade is set to begin at 11 a.m. near the Fort Worth Convention Center located on 9th and Main Street. There will be buses and floats to celebrate and honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  

Arlington Happenings  

The city of Arlington will be hosting the “MLK Advancing the Dream Celebration,” a four-day series of events from Jan. 16through19. Here are a few of them: 

MLK Poetry meets Blues and R&B– This event will take place on Jan. 17 at 7:00 p.m. in the Bluebonnet Ballroom at UTA’s E.H Hereford University. This will be a night of soulful performances and inspiring poetry honoring MLK’s legacy.  

MLK Day of Service Festival sponsored by the Dallas Wings– This is a free family focused event located at City Center Plaza on Jan.19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This event will celebrate the contributions of Arlington MLK volunteers and showcase talent from local dance groups and bands.  

MLK Historical Timeline Exhibit– This is a travelling exhibit provided in part by Tarrant County College that will be on display at each of the “MLK Advancing the Dream” celebrations. This exhibit will highlight key dates, people and pivotal events during the 1960s Civil Rights Movement and its impact on North Texas.
