EL PASO, TEXAS (KFOX14/CBS4) — A northeast El Paso homeowner said on Friday that her living situation is “up in the air” after a water main break left her family of 10 displaced, and their home on Gschwind Street deemed uninhabitable.
Homeowner Candy Arellano spoke to KFOX14/CBS4 on Friday about her residence on Gschwind Street, which has been declared uninhabitable by El Paso Water after a water main break caused a massive hole in the backyard.
The interior of the house also suffered damage, and Arellano stated that the foundation and structure are compromised, making it unsafe to live in.
Since the water main broke last Saturday night, El Paso Water has provided the family with hotel accommodations.
On Friday, Arellano said that the utility company is now offering to purchase both Arellano’s home and the vacant house next door.
“We spoke to EP Water, they did state to us that the home is unhabitable, so we won’t be able to stay in the home, but they would like to purchase our home now. As of now, we are going to have another week in the rooms that we are in,” Arellano said.
However, Arellano said that beyond next week, her living situation is “up in the air,” but that her goal is to retrieve all the personal belongings she can from the house.
“After that, again, it’s going to be up in the air. I’m not going to know what the situation is. We have to meet with another representative from EP Water to see how the situation for the home is going to work,” Arellano added. “Our goal is for Tuesday to go into the home and get our stuff. We’re thinking whatever the water didn’t touch, just grab whatever we can, and that’s probably going to be the only things. ”
For Arellano and her family, she said she hopes El Paso Water will understand the realities her family is facing.
“I hope EP Water understands and realizes how bad it is, because you know, we lost dogs and we lost memories. All our lives we have been there, and generations before that. We cannot put a price to that, that’s going to be gone and I hope they find it in their hearts realize how bad that situation was. It’s so saddening, and that’s one thing my mom said, I just want my pictures, they’re all in there,” Arellano said.
