Inland locations will likely fall below 32 degrees, coastal locations are expected to be closer to 40.
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The coldest temperatures are expected on Sunday morning, following the dry and windy conditions on Saturday.Â
Saturday is highlighted for a Weather Impact Alert for the fire danger, and Sunday morning is highlighted for the freeze potential. Be ready for low temperatures to fall into the low 30s, possibly the upper 20s, for 1-4 hours on Sunday morning. The forecast is tricky for Corpus Christi because the northerly wind will have the air traveling over the bay, which will likely have sea surface temperatures in the low 50s on Sunday morning. I’m not expecting cold, stunned sea turtles with this freeze. Areas downwind of the water may have just enough moisture in the air to keep temperatures above freezing. The temperature will vary across Corpus Christi. Be ready for a low around 34 degrees at the Corpus Christi International Airport and 41 degrees in Flour Bluff.Â

FREEZE WATCH: issued by the National Weather Service because frost and freeze conditions are possible. A light freeze is expected for inland locations for a few hours. It won’t last long as the wind shifts back out of the southeast on Sunday and sunshine heats things up. The best timeline for the freeze is just 5 hours from 4 AM – 9 AM. Then we aren’t worried about freezing temperatures after that. Highs are in the low to mid 60s with sunny skies and a light southeast wind.Â

The cold front won’t immediately drop temperatures, but the wind will make it feel much colder on Saturday morning. High pressure builds into Saturday night and that is what will push a new surge of colder and drier air into South Texas. The high pressure will also clear the skies Saturday night. The combination of a clear night sky, calmer wind, and dry conditions behind the front will allow radiational cooling, which means the Earth cools much more efficiently. Many times this senario is always colder than the weather models and phone apps are forecasting.Â

A watch means frost and freeze conditions are possible and may impact crops and sensitive vegetation. Bring potted plants inside. Bring pets inside, and people should wear winter layers if they travel outside early on Sunday. A light freeze shouldn’t affect pipes, but it doesn’t hurt to protect exposed outdoor pipes.Â
