Kroger is investing in new stores in North Texas, but that isn’t keeping the grocer from closing down some retail space.

The Cincinnati-based company is shuttering a site in McKinney, according to spokesperson John Votava. It’s located at 2901 Lake Forest Drive, near Eldorado Parkway.

The change follows another closure in the same city to the northeast on University Drive that was revealed last year. Kroger shoppers can head to 1801 N. Lake Forest Drive for a store that remains open. Also, there’s a store in Frisco near the border of McKinney.

While it’s clearing out some sites, Kroger has plans to break ground on a new store in McKinney later this month, Votava said.

The new shuttering comes as Kroger makes a push to streamline its operations with closures revealed last year. In the Dallas-Fort Worth area, the company faces competition from H-E-B, Walmart and smaller-footprint stores such as Trader Joe’s.

“This closure is part of a larger company-wide decision to run more efficiently and ensure the long-term health of our business,” Votava said in the emailed statement.

Employees who are affected will be offered transfers to neighboring stores.

Kroger, which has about 200 stores in Texas, is investing in new sites elsewhere. That includes Fate, which is roughly between Rockwall and Royse City, and another locale that will be disclosed in the future, the company revealed late last year.

While some are trimming their store counts, the overall industry is a key driver of the healthy local retail market in the region. In 2026, the retail industry is forecast to hit 95.4% occupancy, according to Bob Young, executive managing director at Weitzman, a Dallas real estate firm. That would be up from 2025’s 95.3%, a record-setting mark that’s based on data from facilities that are 25,000 square feet and more.
