1. Austin family to invest $100 million in UT medical center development

Austin residents Tench and Simone Coxe announced Monday that they will invest $100 million in the development of the medical center. It will integrate the work of UT’s Dell Medical School and UT MD Anderson cancer care to “deliver the highest quality of care in Central Texas.”

The new medical center will aim to reflect Austin’s rapid growth and increased health care needs, establishing the capital city as a well-known and trusted destination for health care.

2. Republican Rep. Monica De La Cruz pitches special visa for immigrants to work in construction

U.S. Rep. Monica De La Cruz, R-Edinburg, is raising eyebrows with her proposal to create a special visa for immigrants who want to work temporarily in the U.S. construction industry. 

De La Cruz announced earlier this month that she wants to create a special visa program, similar to the Bracero program, which allowed workers from Mexico to come to the U.S. and work in the agriculture sector. 

3. Waymo vehicles still not stopping for Austin ISD school buses

Waymo robotaxis were recently recalled because of a software error due to safety concerns during school hours, but according to the Austin Independent School District, the vehicles are still having problems stopping for school buses.

A district spokesperson said they are still seeing safety violations around their school buses even after the recall.

4. Texas health experts warn of flu outbreak as school begins

Health experts are continuing to warn families about a major flu outbreak, especially as children go back to school this month.

5. Uvalde teacher who survived class shooting testifies he saw ‘black shadow with a gun’

A teacher who survived the 2022 shooting inside a Robb Elementary school classroom in Uvalde, Texas, told a jury Monday the attack began with a “black shadow” with a gun walking inside and that he prayed for the attack to be over after being shot along with his students.
