Hundreds of protesters gathered on the corner of Preston and Parker roads in Plano on Saturday afternoon in frigid weather, brandishing signs against ICE and the Trump administration.
Protesters waved U.S. flags and cheered as cars honked on the busy intersection. Signs read “ICE out,” “Abolish ICE” and “We have no king.”
Some donned inflatable costumes: a unicorn, teddy bear and dinosaur.
Collin County Democratic Party Chair Jeremy Sutka said the protest was originally planned as a No Kings demonstration, but organizers added efforts to speak out against ICE following the fatal shooting of Renee Good.
Breaking News
Earlier this month, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer shot and killed Good in Minneapolis. The 37-year-old woman was shot in the head in front of a family member in a snowy residential neighborhood south of downtown Minneapolis.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, President Donald Trump and others in his administration have repeatedly characterized the Minneapolis shooting as an act of self-defense and cast Good as a villain, suggesting she used her vehicle as a weapon to attack the officer who shot her.
Vice President JD Vance said the shooting was justified and Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, was a “victim of left-wing ideology.”
This week, a federal officer shot another person in the leg in Minneapolis after being attacked with a shovel and broom handle while trying to make an arrest.
More than 250 people signed up for the event, according to Sutka, and hundreds huddled in jackets and scarves at the busy Plano intersection.
“This is not the America we want to live in,” Sutka said. “We need to make a change. That’s why people are angry. They’re upset.”
This comes a week after hundreds gathered in Fort Worth to protest the administration’s deportation push. This is a part of an array of nationwide demonstrations after recent shootings involving federal immigration officers.
