San Antonio’s culinary community is reeling after the death of one of its most beloved chefs. Joshua Calderon, a veteran of Three Star Bar, Bud’s Southern Rotisserie, and The Cookhouse, passed away on October 19, surrounded by family.

A GoFundMe campaign has been established to help his wife and small children pay for the funeral and other end-of-life expenses. As of publication, the fundraiser has almost reached its $10,000 goal.

A score of Alamo City food and beverage professionals took to social media to honor the late chef. He is remembered for an enormously generous spirit — helping plan community fundraisers and mentoring young chefs.

“I’m just completely heartbroken,” wrote Saint City Supper Club founder Joel Rivas in a tribute. “It’s been a rare thing to encounter a person that would so willingly give themselves to help and serve others. Your heart and love for your family, your friends, and your community were such an incredible thing to watch.”

“Sometimes if you’re lucky, the good Lord blesses you with a truly good friend,” shared Tacos Cucuy chef Paul Morales. “Someone to share life’s experiences with, the good and the bad. I have been crying all morning because my brother has went home.”

Several community members remembered his goofy side. Bakery Lorraine executive pastry chef Jenn Reisman posted a photo of herself and Calderon in prom drag. Former Hello Paradise chef Yoshi Flores remembered a shared love of nu-metal band Staind.
The write-up on the GoFundMe encapsulated Calderon’s approach to life.

“As a chef, Josh poured his heart into his cooking, creating more than just meals — he created memories. Whether it was a family gathering, a cookout with friends, or a quiet dinner at home, Josh’s food always brought people together. He had that rare gift of making everyone feel cared for and welcome,” it read.

The time and date of Calderon’s memorial service are still pending at press time. The community can pay respects and donate via GoFundMe.
