Police said the District Attorney’s Office has accepted a murder charge against the suspect.

HOUSTON — A chaotic scene early Saturday morning left an innocent bystander dead and others hurt after a man carjacked a woman while her 12-year-old son was in the car in Houston’s midtown, police say.

It happened around 12:45 a.m. on Travis Street near Dennis Street.

Houston Police said it all started when a woman in a Ford Edge noticed a disturbance that she thought a family member was involved in. When she got out of her car, HPD said a man got into her car and tried to steal it while her 12-year-old son was inside.

The woman tried to stop the man from taking her car and her son managed to get out of the passenger side. HPD said the man pushed the woman away and sped off. Police believe he may have hit the woman as he was speeding away. The child was not hurt.

As the man was speeding down Travis Street toward Lamar, police said he crashed into a Kia Soul and a Toyota pickup truck.

HPD said the Kia rolled over and its driver was killed. The Toyota driver was taken to a hospital as a precaution.

According to police, the suspect suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital.

HPD said the Harris County District Attorney’s Office has accepted a murder charge against the suspect.

The woman who was carjacked remained on the scene to help investigators.

Police did not identify the suspect or any of the victims.
