Preston Hollow Elementary student Blen T. captured first place at Dallas ISD’s 34th Annual MLK Jr. Oratory Competition.

Cameron K. from Clara Oliver Elementary School claimed second place, while Kennedy K. from Solar Preparatory School for Girls finished third.

The competition continues a decades-long tradition of inspiring elementary students to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy through public speaking. Students develop crucial communication skills while celebrating their communities’ cultural diversity.

Eight finalists delivered three-to-five-minute speeches addressing this year’s theme: “As a student of Dr. King’s life, what message of hope do you think he would have for the world today?” Each presentation wove together the theme with lessons from Dr. King’s teachings.

All finalists received substantial prizes, including laptops, personalized plaques, gift bags, and monetary awards from sponsor Foley & Lardner LLP. An anonymous donor doubled the prize money this year.

The annual event extends beyond Dallas, inspiring elementary students in multiple cities to engage with MLK’s enduring message.

Through participation, young speakers enhance both their writing abilities and stage presence while honoring the civil rights leader’s vision.
