Controlled burn aims to clear years of debris
Crews are managing a grass fire in the Addicks Reservoir area near I-10 and Eldridge Parkway, which is under control and intended to burn off debris to reduce future fire threats. (Houston Fire Department)
HOUSTON – You may have noticed the plume of smoke on the west side of town on Sunday, but fire officials say “there is no need for alarm.” Authorities are working to contain a grass fire in the Addicks Reservoir area, and they said it’s under control.
The Houston Fire Department, the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers and the Texas A&M Forestry Service are managing the large fire between I-10 and Eldridge Parkway, south of Bear Creek Park.
“While the fire started as a grass fire, our managed response will allow the fire to grow and burn off years of debris. Managing the fire in this manner will aid in reducing potential fire threats in the future,” HFD officials said.

Authorities are asking people who see the smoke to refrain from calling 911. Instead, if you’re driving, authorities say to reduce your speed and turn on your headlights when smoke it present.
