Even as Dallas officials await detailed cost and condition reports on City Hall, a separate process is moving forward that could complicate any push to demolish the building.

A subcommittee of the city’s Landmark Commission is scheduled to meet Wednesday to review status on whether to designate City Hall as a historic landmark.

The commission launched a review in March 2025 to determine whether the building by renowned architect I.M. Pei should be granted landmark designation.

While the commission can recommend designation, the City Council makes the final decision.

The landmark effort has drawn support from preservation advocates who say the building’s architectural significance warrants protection. Prominent business interests support relocation, seeing a chance to jump-start redevelopment downtown.

City officials also plan a market study on best uses for the current City Hall site, including the economic impact of redevelopment versus maintaining the building.
