SAN ANTONIO — The largest Martin Luther King Jr. March in the country is underway.

It is an incredible sight, with thousands of people taking part.

This celebration is a way for our city to come together and honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The city turns out in a huge way and, together, reflects unity, love and respect for one another. And in this 39th year, three-time Olympic gold medalist and U.S. gymnast Gabby Douglas will be the keynote speaker.

The march will began at 10 a.m. at Martin Luther King Jr. Academy and stretch just under three miles, ending at Pittman-Sullivan Park. That’s where Grammy Award-winning singer and actress Coco Jones will headline the post-march festivities.

We spoke with organizers from Dream Week and the MLK committees about why San Antonio has the largest turnout and what this year’s march means.

It’s an opportunity for people to know that coming together on that day really exudes the unity of the city of San Antonio, our community,” said Francine Prosser Johnson, MLK public awards chair. “What we need right now more than ever is for people to come out, collaborate, see each other, talk, and see the amazing city of San Antonio as a collective body.

News 4 and Fox San Antonio will be livestreaming and providing exclusive Sky 4 aerial views from the march and Pittman-Sullivan Park from 10 a.m. to noon. We’ll also broadcast live on News 4 and Fox San Antonio from 11 a.m. to noon.
