There is something deeply soothing about a Lubbock sunset. It doesn’t matter what kind of day you’ve had, or if your life is on track, off track, or actively doing donuts in a United parking lot. The sky will still put on a dramatic pink-and-orange show, and all of us collectively slow down and stare.

Speaking of the wind, after a while, you stop fighting it. You accept that your hair is never going to look the way you planned. You stop checking the weather app because you already know. Windy. Dusty. Surprise dirt. And somehow, that acceptance is freeing.

There’s comfort in how predictable things are.

The same streets. The same restaurants you swear you’re “taking a break from” but absolutely aren’t. The same drive where you zone out so hard you forget how you got home, but you did, and that’s what matters.

And let’s not ignore the unspoken community moments. Everyone collectively side-eyes the same bad drivers. Everyone knows exactly what part of town you’re talking about when you say “over there by that one place that used to be something else.” Everyone has at least one strong opinion about Mexican food.

Lubbock isn’t loud about being lovable. It doesn’t beg you to stay. It just kind of lets you settle in, healthily lower your standards, and breathe a little easier.

And honestly? Some days, that’s more than enough.

I spent many years trying to get away from this place, and now? I’m just settling in, more and more, each day.
