EL PASO, TEXAS (KFOX14/CBS4) — A local teenager is using his “wish” to help other children at the El Paso Children’s Hospital.
For the first time in its 40-year history, Make-A-Wish New Mexico is granting two wishes simultaneously to give back to the community, thanks to the generosity of two wish kids.
Seventeen-year-old Kyelyn Courter from Las Cruces, N.M., who recently overcame cancer after treatment at El Paso Children’s Hospital, has chosen to purchase toys and entertainment supplies for the hospital wing where he was treated to be his wish.
Speaking to KFOX14/CBS4 on Monday, Courter explained his wish, saying, “Part of the reason I wanted to do my wish is because I saw the 8th floor and they got a renewed thing and everything like that. And the 7th floor didn’t. I realized that I had a lot more than most kids would, especially in this situation. So, I couldn’t really think of anything but wanting to give back.”
The second wish comes from a 10-year-old girl, also from Las Cruces, who wishes to remain anonymous.
Her wish is to provide equipment to All Seasons Adaptive Sports, an organization that supports children with physical and cognitive challenges in participating in sports. Having personally experienced the benefits of their mission, she aims to help others enjoy the same opportunities.
According to Make-A-Wish New Mexico, these wishes are made possible through the support of the Jennifer Riordan Foundation.
Sara Lister, President & CEO of Make-A-Wish New Mexico, expressed gratitude for the foundation’s partnership, saying, “These two wish kids are extraordinary for so many reasons and their desire to give back to their communities is very admirable. They will change so many lives through their generosity.”
Michael Riordan, President of The Jennifer Riordan Foundation, added, “Make-A-Wish warms our hearts in a very special way. When an amazing young person chooses to use their wish to give to others, we feel the ultimate power of Jennifer’s motto to always be kind, loving, caring, and sharing.”
These two wishes come as Make-A-Wish New Mexico celebrates its 40th year, as it continues to provide life-changing wishes to children battling critical illnesses.
