NABWE NAMED BIG TEN’S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

For the second time this season redshirt junior Anthonett Nabwe has earned the Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week honor, the conference office announced on January 22. Nabwe has won eight weekly honors from the Big Ten in her career, and has claimed two of the three weekly honors she has qualified for this season.

The two-time Big Ten champion won the weight throw at the 2026 Graduate Classic with a toss of 23.26m (76-3 3/4), marking the 11th consecutive regular season competition she has won dating back to her last non-victory on Feb. 3, 2024 (Gopher Classic). Despite the 23.26m (76-3 3/4) toss in Lincoln not being a lifetime or season best, the redshirt junior’s winning weight throw mark would still put Nabwe at No. 1 in the NCAA this season with the No. 2 toss currently being 22.95m (75-3 1/2) from Akaoma Odeluga of Ole Miss. Nabwe was also the runner-up in the women’s shot put at the Graduate Classic with a season-best throw of 16.86m (55-3 3/4), good enough for the fifth-best in the Big Ten this year.

WIRTH BRINGS HOME WORLD BRONZE MEDAL

For the first time in history, the United States of America secured a U20 World Cross Country Championships men’s team medal finish on home soil on January 10, in Tallahassee. Minnesota’s Salvador Wirth finished 30th overall, and fifth among the U.S. competitors, to aid the team finish that brought home the red, white and blue a bronze medal.

Wirth competed alongside Minnesota teammates Norah Hushagen and Avery Marasco-Johnson, who ran for the women’s team at Apalachee Regional Park. The University of Minnesota was the only NCAA team to have three representatives on the U20 rosters. Wirth clocked an 8K time of 25:39 on a course that included non-traditional features like a man-made ‘rollercoaster’ hill, a sand pit, a water pit, a mud pit and alligator logs to hurdle. Hushagen ran to a 53rd-place finish (22:33.0) in her U.S. debut while Marasco-Johnson came across in 58th overall (23:01.0) and helped Team USA finish in fourth overall (108 points). Additionally, Minnesota signee Oliver Crowe finished 54th in the same U20 men’s race on Saturday for Team Canada in his first appearance on the world stage for his home country.

LAST TIME OUT

The University of Minnesota track and field team completed the Graduate Classic in Lincoln, Neb., and picked up six victories from January 16-17. Zoie Dundon won both the women’s mile and the 800m while Victory Godah claimed the top spot in the 60m and the 200m.

Dundon’s weekend started with the mile on Friday, posting a lifetime best 4:38.77 to win the event and in the process ran to No. 3 all-time on the program’s top 10 list. Dundon is now the sixth Gopher to go below 4:39 in the indoor mile. On Saturday in the 800m Dundon ran to a win in a time of 2:06.65, improving on her previous lifetime best (2:06.70) that still has her at No. 8 all-time at Minnesota. Godah picked up wins in the 60m and the 200m, running times of 7.52 and 24.45 in the process. Ellie Kuechle won the women’s 600m in a lifetime best performance of 1:32.48, about one second off the program’s all-time top 10 list.
