Dallas officials will announce their plans on Friday for housing hundreds of people as freezing temperatures and wintry conditions are expected to sweep across North Texas this weekend.
A news conference is set for 1 p.m. at the Automobile Building in Fair Park, 3809 Grand Ave., which will be the city’s main shelter for people seeking warmth from the cold.
The temporary overnight shelter will open at 4 p.m. and is planned to stay open 24 hours a day throughout the freezing weather event.
The National Weather Service’s Fort Worth office warns that North Texas could get up to half an inch of ice and another 1 to 3 inches of snow. Winter storm and extreme cold warnings are in effect and officials say power outages are possible. Temperatures in the teens and single digits are expected over the weekend along with bitter wind chills. Warmer weather isn’t likely until early next week.
