HOUSTON – Commissioner Lesley Briones and Mayor John Whitmire will be on the ground Monday at Bayland Community Center to update winter storm response efforts, support residents and highlight resources available to those affected by extreme cold, officials said.
Briones, who has said public safety is her top priority, opened Bayland Community Center in partnership with the American Red Cross as a 24-hour warming shelter for residents in need. The center provides a place to stay, warmth and access to emergency services during freezing temperatures.
Extreme cold warning in Houston through noon Tuesday
The visit comes as the region deals with sustained low temperatures that pose health and safety risks, particularly for people experiencing homelessness or those without reliable heating. Officials plan to use the appearance to reiterate available resources and coordinate ongoing response efforts.
The two officials are expected to meet residents and shelter staff and provide updates on county and city support for those impacted by the winter conditions.
