The suspect was arrested after an overnight search in Grimes County, officials say.

GRIMES COUNTY, Texas — A Johnson County murder suspect was arrested in southeastern Texas over the weekend after an overnight search, officials say.

The Grimes County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a man trespassing at a home off of FM 1696 in Bedias, about 30 miles west of Huntsville, shortly after 7 p.m. Oct. 19, according to a statement. The caller reported the man was wearing black shorts and no shirt and “appeared to be experiencing a possible mental health episode,” deputies said.

Deputies were told the man may have a pistol in his pocket and area residents reported the same man had “knocked on several doors earlier in the day asking for a shirt,” according to a press release.

“The subject was also reportedly avoiding State Highway 90, stating there were ‘too many cops,'” the statement continued.

Deputies patrolled the Bedias area the night of Oct. 19, but didn’t find the man then.

Then, shortly after 9 a.m. Oct. 20, deputies were called about a “suspicious” vehicle, a black Cadillac Escalade that was believed to potentially be stolen, at a private property near County Road 115, officials said.

A constable was told at about 10:10 a.m. Oct. 20 that the suspect had been at the Smiley’s convenience store in Bedias, and the suspect was detained in the area at about 10:12 a.m., according to a statement.

Later that morning, deputies say they also recovered an Astra .357 caliber revolver.

Further investigation found that the suspect, Brandon Ashley, was wanted out of Johnson County for murder, according to the Grimes County Sheriff’s Office.

Ashley was taken for medical evaluation, officials say, and was expected to be taken to the Grimes County Jail after treatment.

Grimes County officials say the investigation remains active and ask anyone with information in the case to contact them at 936-873-2151 or submit a tip through P3tips.com.
