The Corpus Christi Downtown Management District announced it is retiring the Downtown Run Club after six years, but encourage members to attend Run Club After Dark.
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Corpus Christi Downtown Management District announced it is retiring the Downtown Run Club after six years, ending its direct involvement in the weekly Wednesday evening runs held in downtown Corpus Christi, according to the DMD.
The Downtown Run Club, which meets at B.U.S. (Bar Under the Sun), held its final DMD-supported run on Wednesday. While the DMD is stepping away, weekly runs will continue under the Downtown Run Club After Dark, which currently mirrors the same day, time, location and route as the Downtown Run Club.
“CCDMD remains supportive of the run community and appreciates the role it has played in activating downtown spaces and fostering community connection,” said Arlene Medrano, Executive Director of the Downtown Management District. “Thank you to all participants, partners, and downtown businesses who have contributed to the Downtown Corpus Christi Run Club.”
Medrano also thanked the club’s longtime presenting sponsor for its support over the years.
“We extend a heartfelt thank you to longtime presenting sponsor, AEP Texas, whose support has played a vital role in the growth of Downtown Run Club,” she said.
The Downtown Run Club was launched by the DMD in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic as a way for residents to safely gather outdoors while promoting physical activity and wellness. Over the years, the club grew into a regular social fitness group, hosting weekly runs followed by networking opportunities and prize giveaways at participating downtown bars and restaurants.
The Downtown Management District said coordination of the weekly run will transition to longtime Downtown Run Club Ambassador Armando Mendez, who has been involved with the club since its early days and currently leads Downtown Run Club After Dark.
3NEWS Chief Meteorologist Carly Smith, who served as Ambassador for the DMD Downtown Run Club, said she plans to continue working with CC Run Club After Dark when her schedule allows.
“The Downtown Corpus Christi Run Club is where I met a lot of my really close friends. I am excited that the Wednesday night run will continue, and I think it’s in great hands with Armando and CC Run Club After Dark.”
The DMD also announced the WinStamp check-in app will be officially retired Feb. 25. Participants may redeem accumulated check-ins for merchandise through that date or while supplies last, whichever comes first.
Runners are encouraged to follow Downtown Run Club After Dark for future updates and information on weekly downtown runs.
