At 34, Dallas-raised vocalist Jazzmeia Horn is already a highly esteemed veteran. The three-time Grammy nominee is headed to New York City’s famed Jazz at Lincoln Center for a series of May concerts, following gigs in Switzerland and beyond. (She’ll perform Feb. 7 in Lewisville.)
Yet for all her acclaim, Horn refuses to coast on past glories. Last year, the scat-singing phenom told All About Jazz that she still studies with three separate teachers to sharpen her diction, improvisation and piano playing.
“It’s not going to be perfect. You must always practice,” she said. “The two things that I want to impart upon all the vocalists all over the world: Practice, and be yourself.”
Horn — a 2009 grad of Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts — released her fourth and most recent album, Messages, in 2024. One of the tunes, “Happy Livin,’” was inspired by her late grandfather, the Rev. B.L. Horn, pastor at Dallas’ Golden Chain Missionary Baptist Church, where Jazzmeia first learned to sing.

For her next project — a children’s album — her two school-age daughters provided the inspiration.
“They need something more than just the silly sounds they get from the cartoons and things like ‘Baby Shark,’” Horn said. “That’s sweet and cute. But they need something more meaningful.”
