Parents can meet teachers, explore classrooms and enroll children for the upcoming school year.
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Corpus Christi Independent School District (CCISD) is inviting families to get a head start on learning as Pre-K registration kicks off this weekend.
CCISD offers free prekindergarten services to students who meet one of the Texas Education Agency eligibility criteria and tuition-based prekindergarten services for students who do not meet any eligibility criteria, according to the district’s website.
Any child who is 3 or 4 years old by Sept. 1 is eligible for prekindergarten. The event will be held at the CCISD Center for Instruction, located at 4321 Prescott Street, on Saturday, Jan. 30, from 9-11 a.m.
District leaders say pre-K helps children build early reading and math skills while also learning how to succeed in a classroom setting. Amy Lavigne, an early childhood specialist, says those first school experiences are about much more than academics.
“Pre-K is very essential for our parents and our students because it gets them ready for kindergarten,” Lavigne said. “It teaches emergent literacy and math skills, but it also helps them learn social skills and how to be in a classroom in a fun and loving way.”
Lavigne says one growing challenge for young children is spending more time on devices and less time interacting face-to-face.
“We’re having to help them learn those social skills more in the classroom,” Lavigne explained. “Pre-K gives them that chance to talk, share and learn how to learn with other kids.”
Families who attend registration events can meet pre-K teachers, explore learning activities, and get help with the enrollment process. Staff will also be on hand to answer questions and guide parents through online pre-enrollment if they haven’t completed it yet.
District leaders say it’s designed to be welcoming, fun, and helpful — especially for families sending a child to school for the first time.
