Team roping heeler Jonathan Torres hasn’t skipped a beat from appearing at the 2025 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in December.

Tuesday night at the Fort Worth (Texas) Stock Show & Rodeo, Torres and header Nelson Wyatt shattered the arena record at Dickies Arena, posting a run of 3.3 seconds.

“It’s a great feeling, for sure,” Torres told the PRORODEO Sports News Wednesday. “Just grateful, thankful. Happy to be there and to be in the record books is pretty cool. The feeling sure hasn’t sunk in yet.

“We knew we had a pretty good steer and he stood straight and had a good pattern. That just makes it where the steer gets legal faster and it gives me a chance to throw faster. The way it was set up, we were last out and it was a very tough round. We knew we needed to go at him. (Nelson) nailed the start and it just felt like there was no wasted motions and I was in a good spot.”

The run by Wyatt/Torres broke the arena record of 3.6 seconds set by Lightning Aguilera/Coleby Payne in Fort Worth in 2022. Last year, Levi Lord/Dustin Egusquiza and Riley Kittle/Will Woodfin matched the mark.

Wyatt/Torres came just short of tying the team roping world record. That mark sits at 3.2 seconds and was set last year in Nampa, Idaho, at the Snake River Stampede by Mason Appleton/Rance Doyal.

“For a second I almost thought, ‘Wow, world record.’ And we kind of looked at each other and we were both thinking the same thing,” Torres said. “It was definitely the fastest time for me at a PRORODEO. That’s a personal best for me, and I think the same for him. I’m just happy to be able to do my job.”

In December, Torres won three rounds with header Kolton Schmidt in Las Vegas at the NFR. The Ocala, Fla., cowboy collected $218,869 in total earnings at the NFR. He finished the season fourth in the PRCA | Bill Fick Ford World Standings with $330,541 for the 2025 season.

Wyatt/Torres have six NFR qualifications between the two. Torres made his fourth trip in December. Wyatt came just short of making his third trip.

They currently lead the average in the third bracket in Fort Worth, with the second round set to take place Wednesday night. The top two teams from each bracket will advance to one of the semifinal rounds. The third money winner will be placed in a wild card round.

“I think for sure if we can get a little money we’ll be able to come back to the semifinals,” Torres said. “That’s the main goal. Just trying to get back to that final night.”
