CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Hundreds of people gathered on Mustang Island Wednesday to watch the release of nearly 140 sea turtles back into Gulf waters.

All of the turtles were rescued following the most recent freeze in the Coastal Bend. Officials said the animals were cold-stunned and taken to safe locations, including the ARK, for care.

Staff said the successful rescue and release effort was made possible by members of the community who reported distressed turtles, along with volunteers and agencies that helped transport them.

With another cold front expected to move through the area, questions were raised about whether the newly released turtles would remain warm enough in the water. Representatives with the ARK said the turtles are expected to be fine.

Andrew Orgill, a staff supervisor with the ARK, said once turtles are returned to where they are naturally supposed to be this time of year, they typically move to warmer, deeper water and are not repeatedly affected by cold-stunning events.

Officials remind the public to report cold or injured sea turtle sightings by calling 1-866-TURTLE-5, even if it is unclear whether the animal is alive.
