Cold temperatures and possible travel impacts early Saturday

  • January 31, 2026

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Overnight, a cold front will slip south into our region. Dropping temperatures and upping our chances for patchy freezing fog tomorrow morning.

This is not a big Arctic blast. Not a snowmaker. Just a shallow push of colder Canadian air arriving quietly after midnight and settling in Saturday morning.

Behind the front, winds move upslope, rising gently against the Caprock. As that air rises, it cools, allowing moisture to condense near the surface. At the same time, surface temperatures drop below freezing. Lows in the upper teens and low 20s.

This creates the potential for tiny liquid droplets to form close to the ground, producing fog and light drizzle. Because surface temperatures are below freezing, those droplets could freeze on contact with roads, bridges and other exposed surfaces.

Freezing fog and freezing drizzle are especially tricky because they don’t always produce the obvious accumulation. Roads may appear damp, but elevated surfaces like bridges and overpasses can ice over quickly creating slick conditions. Drivers should allow extra time and use caution during the morning commute.

If cloud cover hangs around longer than expected, some areas may struggle to climb out of the 20s and 30s, especially north and east of Lubbock.

Conditions improve by late Saturday afternoon as drier air moves in and clouds gradually thin. The cooler weather will be short-lived. By Sunday, winds turn back to the southwest, skies clear, and temperatures rebound toward seasonal temperatures.

Highs in the 50s and 60s expected throughout much of next week, with dry and uneventful weather continuing.
