LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Elevated winds overnight have kept temperatures from dropping as dramatically as expected early Thursday morning, but that doesn’t mean the roads are safe.
KCBD(KCBD)
As of 4 a.m., temperatures across the area remained in the 30s with some locations in the 40s, above the freezing mark. However, patchy black ice has been reported on roadways, particularly at intersections and on bridges and overpasses where untreated surfaces have refrozen. Use extra caution during the morning commute, allow extra distance between vehicles and take it slow on all roadways.
Warming arrives by afternoon
A surface front will gradually track across the area through Thursday morning, with winds shifting from southwest to northerly. These winds will peak during the early afternoon hours, with gusts potentially reaching 30 mph in some locations.
KCBD(KCBD)
High temperatures Thursday will reach the mid 50s, warmer than Wednesday. As temperatures climb through the afternoon, black ice conditions should improve significantly heading into Friday morning.

Winds will diminish into the evening as the front moves through.
KCBD(KCBD)Warming trend continues Friday
Temperatures will continue to warm into Friday. However, a cooler Saturday will follow before an extended warming trend takes over from Sunday into mid next week, with highs climbing into the 50s and 60s.
