Today’s Big Stories

1. Military razor wire fence installed in Rio Grande Valley neighborhood

When you walk down a neighborhood, the last thing one expects to find is a tightly packed military-grade razor wire fence. However, in Penitas, Texas, that is exactly what has many residents concerned and afraid.

This razor wire barrier is about a quarter mile long right along Military Highway and also right across the street from several other homes. We spoke to several residents who expressed their concerns.

2. Texas jails have more than 400 pregnant inmates monthly. The state is studying what happens to them

Texas has for years tracked the number of pregnant people in county jails and incidents of restraints — but now, the state is also collecting information about their prenatal care, mental health indicators, pregnancy outcomes and more. Advocates hope this effort will help demonstrate that the harm to the health of these mothers — many of whom are arrested on non-violent or low-level charges — is preventable in the first place.

3. 3 elections in 4 months and new U.S. House map lead to confusion and voter fatigue in Texas district

Rep. Christian Menefee of Texas, the newest member of Congress, started the job Monday — and now has just four weeks to convince Houston voters he already deserves reelection. His opponent Amanda Edwards also is running again for the 18th District seat in next month’s Democratic primary. So is Rep. Al Green, who for decades represented a district nearby but now finds himself living in a newly drawn 18th.

The back-to-back elections are among the head-spinning electoral oddities that voters in heavily Democratic Houston have experienced in recent months.
