A second inmate escaped the custody of the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office in as many days, apparently emboldened by an attempted escape the day before, the sheriff says.
Tarrant County Sheriff Bill Waybourn said a trustee inmate working at a low-security laundry facility decided to leave his job detail Tuesday afternoon.
Waybourn said the inmate, identified as Victor Castillo, left the facility on the 5400 block of Resource Drive at about 12:45 p.m. and was returned to custody about 40 minutes later.
The sheriff said the inmate was apparently emboldened by an attempted escape yesterday, where an inmate ran from a transport van while being moved between facilities. That inmate was taken into custody a short time later in a nearby trailer park, wearing only boxers and a T-shirt.
The trustee inmate, Waybourn said, had formulated a plan to change out of his jumper and into other clothes in the laundry facility before leaving his job detail.
“We got information after he was arrested that he had planned it yesterday afternoon,” Waybourn said, saying the inmate switched into a pair of pants typically worn by female inmates. “When I say he planned, it wasn’t a big plan, but it was a plan.”
Trustee inmates are volunteers who participate in work programs and must qualify for the low-security positions. Waybourn said they’ve never had a trustee attempt an escape before and that the inmate was being held for low-level possession charges. Now, Waybourn said, the inmate will be held in a maximum security facility and could face a more serious charge that could add 10 years to his prison sentence.
Waybourn said the trustees typically have some freedom to move around while working in the laundry area, washing and folding clothes. The sheriff said they will review how the inmate left and determine what needs to be changed to make the facility as secure as possible.
Waybourn said it did not appear the inmate had any help from anyone outside the prison.
Four Fort Worth ISD campuses were placed on “secure” status while the search for the inmate was underway nearby, including O.D. Wyatt High School, TCC South Collegiate High School, Clifford Davis Elementary School and Carter Park Elementary School.
