A woman remained in custody Tuesday after being accused of fatally shooting her daughter inside their home in Dallas’ Red Bird area following a verbal argument about alcohol, according to an arrest-warrant affidavit.

Shanika Battle, 49, was arrested at the scene Monday and faces a murder charge. As of Tuesday afternoon, no bail amount had been set.

Dallas police received a call from Tabitha Jones, 28, around 3:56 p.m. stating that Battle, her mother, had shot her in the side while the two were at a home in the 800 block of Green Cove Lane. Officers were a few blocks over and responded to the scene by 3:59 p.m., according to the affidavit.

Once there, officers took Battle into custody and found Jones in a bedroom with a gunshot wound.

Jones was transported to the Methodist Dallas Medical Center where she died shortly after 5 p.m., the affidavit said.

After obtaining a search warrant for the home, authorities recovered a pistol in the living room next to Battle’s purse and a bullet casing that matched the gun’s caliber in the hallway.

Battle was transported to Dallas police headquarters where she consented to an interview, according to the affidavit.

She told police that Jones had been upset about alcohol that Battle had taken from her, according to the affidavit. Battle said Jones began going into “rooms that were not hers” before the two started arguing.

Battle said the altercation never became physical, though she told police the gun was hers and that she had gotten it out of her purse to scare Jones. She denied shooting Jones, the affidavit said.

Battle also confirmed to investigators that she and Jones were the only people inside the home at the time of the incident.
