The Godmother of Soul has graced Houston with her presence-just not for the reason most would expect.
On Tuesday, Oct. 21, the one and only Patti LaBelle made an appearance in an H-E-B in the Houston-area suburb of Spring. The singer’s pop-up wasn’t in celebration of new music or an upcoming television or film role. LaBelle stopped by the grocery store to promote the latest addition to her growing food brand, Patti’s Good Life: pancake and waffle mix.
TikToks from shoppers at the exclusive event show footage of the “On My Own” songstress at a Spring H-E-B, where she set up shop at a table under a balloon arch in-between aisles for a meet-and-greet with customers on their daily grocery runs. As a line of fans awaits their turn, the music legend is seen chatting and signing autographs (on what appears to be the boxes of pancake mix themselves).
That same day, LaBelle also made a stop at a different grocery store almost an hour away (yes, even icons are subject to Houston traffic), thrilling customers at the Kingwood Kroger on 25651 US Hwy 59 N. The news of that appearance, promoted by Houston food influencers and local radio personalities alike, was met with a mixture of excitement and genuine confusion. While many fans were happy that the Grammy-winning singer was coming to town, they also couldn’t understand the choice of venue. A grocery store pop-up makes sense, given that Patti’s Good Life is sold in stores across the country-but why Kingwood of all places?
“Kingwood ain’t Houston,” wrote one local under the comments of a TikTok from 97.9 The Box’s very own JMAC announcing LaBelle’s incoming visit, punctuating their disapproval with a side eye emoji.
“Patti gone have to meet me half way,” wrote another.
(Not all were deterred by the northeast Houston location, however: “Kingwood down the street y’all better stop,” read one comment. “Not real Houstonians fr.”)
LaBelle is just the latest A-list name of make a promotional pit stop at a local (but also very, very far away) grocery store in the Houston area. In late September, rapper Cardi B made headlines for taking over a Cypress Walmart Supercenter to celebrate the release of her sophomore album. Like LaBelle’s pop-up, the location of the event was a headscratcher, but the distance didn’t stop fans from flocking to the everything-store for a glimpse of Cardi, who seemed generally baffled by the super-sized Walmart.
The Patti’s Good Life owner appears to be a little more accustomed to Texas grocery store culture, however. Though her pancake mix officially launched last year, LaBelle is spinning the block to remind customers that she’s That Auntie when it comes to good eats. It’s the newest product from the Patti’s Good Life brand, preceded by a host of other LaBelle-approved food offerings including her hot-ticket sweet potato pie and peach cobbler, sold exclusively at Walmart. The food company, which also offers frozen meals, condiments, and housewares, was founded in 2008.
