A petition to rename Lake Ray Hubbard after Oak Cliff singer Ray Wylie Hubbard never gathered much steam. But that’s OK. Music lovers in Dallas still have deep respect for the sly songwriter of tunes like “Snake Farm,” “Screw You, We’re From Texas” and, of course, “Up Against the Wall, Redneck Mother.”

At 79, Hubbard is still going strong. He recently cut tracks with Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell for his first new album since 2022’s Co-Starring Too, which featured duets with Ringo Starr and Willie Nelson.

Although he’s been sober since 1987 — thanks, in part, to another guitar player from “the Cliff,” Stevie Ray Vaughan — Hubbard still sings about his wild and crazy days. Expect to hear “Mother Blues,” an autobiographical romp about the Oak Lawn nightclub, love, lust and fate. His band includes his son Lucas Hubbard on electric guitar.
