EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — Police identified the man who died after a serious crash on Tuesday night on I-10 West at Mesa.

The man who died was identified as 25-year-old Jesus Chico Jr.

The Special Traffic Investigations Unit reported that Britney Torres was driving a 2017 Ford Mustang in the wrong direction when she collided head-on with Chico’s 2009 Honda Civic.

Torres suffered minor injuries.

The DWI Task Force has been called in to assist with the ongoing investigation.

This incident marks the fifth traffic fatality in El Paso this year, matching the number of fatalities at this time in 2025.

Three wrong-way crashes have been reported in the Borderland this week.

The Texas Department of Transportation of El Paso provided the following statement:

“Wrong Way Driver countermeasures are installed on off-ramps for freeways in the El Paso District in line with TxDOT standards that include signs and pavement markings.”

According to the TxDOT website, they continue to implement new engineering technology to stop these drivers, such as reflective pavement arrows, led wrong way flashing signs, and thermal sensors utilizing ai.
