WRIGHT TWP. — Mary Mushock Namey is a firm believer that it doesn’t matter how you start the season, but rather how you finish it.

The same could be said for the Comets on Wednesday night. It wasn’t how they wanted to shoot from the free throw line in the beginning of the game, it was a case of making them when they counted at the end.

After going 2 of 11 from the line in the first half, the Comets shot 14 of 18 from the line in the fourth quarter to defeat Dallas, 48-36, at Crestwood.

The win avenges an earlier loss to Dallas on Jan. 14. It allowed the Comets to finish the regular season 20-2 overall and 10-2 in Division 1. Crestwood locked up a spot in next week’s Wyoming Valley Conference tournament where it will play Division 2 first-place finisher Nanticoke Area.

The victory also helped Crestwood jump over Dallas (19-3, 9-3) for the top seed in Class 5A in the district playoff race. The Comets are ahead of Dallas. North Pocono currently has the No. 3 seed, but has three more games left.

“That is actually a common theme for us,” Mushock Namey said. “It seems in the fourth quarter is when we shoot our best from the foul line. We instill in them that free throws in the fourth quarter win games. That’s happened to us the last two games; we beat two really good teams.”

Crestwood was playing for the first time since it won at Hazleton Area on Sunday night. The momentum from that game carried over to the start of Wednesday night’s contest when the Comets held an 18-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Charlie Hiller scored eight points in the quarter while Keira Dougherty added five. Dallas was 0 for 8 from the floor in the first quarter with the only point coming on a Molly Walsh free throw. The Mountaineers did not make their first shot from the floor until the 7:51 mark of the second quarter when Mia DelGaudio made a 3-pointer.

“We didn’t shoot the ball well at all,” said Dallas coach Vince Bucciarelli. “We shot poorly and we were still in the game. We didn’t get any breaks. I’m proud of my girls, they hung in there.”

Dallas used a 7-0 run to cut the Crestwood lead down to 11 and trailed, 25-15, at halftime. Crestwood shot 1 of 10 from the floor in the third quarter and a Walsh 3-pointer made it a five-point game going to the fourth.

Jackie Gallagher scored eight of her 11 points in the fourth quarter with four coming from the free-throw line. Jordan Andrews had 14 points with five coming from the line and Dougherty made three free throws.

“I think we have come on strong in our last six games,” Mushock Namey said. “I think in that stretch we have played some of our best basketball of the season. We have to use that going forward.”
