The Longhorns could play on grass in 2027, Del Conte said, if coach Steve Sarkisian approves the change. Before Texas makes any changes to Royal-Memorial Stadium, Del Conte said Wednesday night, the Longhorns want to finish the indoor practice facility currently under construction.

“I got to figure out how we’re going to practice,” Del Conte said.

Sarkisian likes to practice in Royal-Memorial Stadium. It’s more convenient for the Longhorns and much closer for players and staff than the current Texas practice facility at Frank Denius Fields.

Once Texas changes the playing surface back to grass, the Longhorns can no longer use Royal-Memorial Field for practice outside of six or seven Friday night walkthroughs every season.

“As soon as you start practicing on it, you start to ruin the grass,” Del Conte said. “You only play on it.”

So, with Frank Denius Fields viewed as a less-than-suitable practice facility because of its location, the Longhorns want to wait for their new facility to be finished before they disrupt their ability to practice at Royal-Memorial Stadium.

“If (Sarkisian) says, ‘Yes, we’re going to do (grass),’ that will start next January,” Del Conte said. “We’ll put a grass field in for the following year. But the timing of that is going to be when he says what he wants.”

The practice facility project, which began in 2024 and is fully financed, is expected to be completed in June.

That was one of a handful of football-related construction updates Del Conte presented on Wednesday.

The Longhorns also created 10 suites in Belmont Hall, where the press box used to be, and sold them for $10 million each. The displaced media will move to a new press area in the south end zone. That job is expected to be completed in the fall. That project also involves an upgraded lobby in Belmont Hall, which also houses a new practice facility for the Longhorns’ spirit squads.

Closer to midfield, Texas is also building a new hub for broadcast personnel. Previously, Del Conte said, camera operators shooting the game were positioned on what amounted to a slab of plywood.

“Our camera wells were not safe at all,” he said. “They were just attachments underneath the building, and it was a situation where every year we had to shore that up and it was really flimsy. It was just not professional and not safe.”

Additionally, the Longhorns are outfitting a new recovery center for student-athletes at the northern end of Royal-Memorial Stadium.

That facility will include saunas, cryotherapy machines and several other high-tech features.

“It’s going to be a mental recovery area for our student-athletes,” Del Conte said.
