The Houston Zoo is mourning the loss of Zamir, a zebu who spent his entire life at the zoo after being born there more than two decades ago.

Zamir lived all 21 years of his life at the Houston Zoo, where he was cared for by animal care and veterinary teams in the John P. McGovern Children’s Zoo. As he aged, zoo officials said Zamir experienced a gradual decline in health and mobility.

After closely monitoring his condition and focusing on his comfort and quality of life, the zoo made what it described as a difficult decision to humanely euthanize him.

Zamir was known for his calm presence and his fondness for scratches, brushes, grain, and treats. According to the zoo, he had a gentle way of connecting with people and was a steady, familiar presence to staff members who worked with him throughout his life.

“While decisions like this are never easy, Zamir’s comfort and welfare were always our highest priority,” the zoo said. “We are grateful for the many years we shared with him and for the exceptional care he received.”

Zoo officials thanked the community for keeping Zamir and his care team in their thoughts as they remember what they called a special animal who will always be part of the Houston Zoo family.
