If you’re driving down San Pedro Avenue or stuck in rush hour traffic in San Antonio, you’ve probably noticed a pyramid-shaped structure towering above Loop 410. Maybe you’re like me, and you’ve rolled past this building countless times, always wondering what on earth it could be but never remembering to look it up.
Just a few minutes from the airport, The Pyramid at 601 NW Loop 410 is actually an iconic, more than 220,000-square-foot office building. I wouldn’t have guessed that’s the case, being that I saw it lit up pink and green one night in November 2025 for the release of Wicked: For Good, but it’s the truth. According to real estate website LoopNet, The Pyramid is nine stories and includes a laundry list of amenities such as a dry cleaner, fitness center, showers, an on-site deli and more.
The property is valued at $38.5 million, according to the Bexar County Appraisal District.
But what’s the lore behind The Pyramid, and how did it come to be one of the most recognizable buildings on the Northside?
Designed by Dallas-based architects Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum Inc., The Pyramid was built in 1980, and according to a 2012 article from MySA, it took shape with Texas limestone quarried near Austin – and some of it even has fossilized shell imprints. The skyline of the area changed a lot that year, as nearby North Star Mall got its iconic boots in January 1980.

Since popping up on the map almost 50 years ago, The Pyramid has had a few different lives. It had been the headquarters of the bygone San Antonio Savings Association, which went under in 1990. In the following decades, ownership has changed hands multiple times and different names have been emblazoned on the face of the building, including Bank of America, Spirit of Texas Bank, Bank SNB and Simmons Bank.
The last decade or so has seen $1.5 million in renovations after it was bought by Boston firm Taurus Investment Holdings in 2016. Five years later, it was sold to an affiliate of Cleveland-based Boyd Watterson Asset Management, and Stream Realty Partners became a property management and leasing partner for the building in December 2025.
It’s safe to say The Pyramid belongs to the growing canon of curiosity-piquing San Antonio buildings you can spot from the highway, including a quirky Mediterranean house and a combination funeral home/wedding venue.
