Texas A&M dropped its first game of the 2026 season on Saturday night, falling 3–2 to the No. 1‑ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders (4–0) in a tight pitching duel at Davis Diamond in front of a record crowd.
The night opened with fireworks from both offenses. Texas Tech came out swinging, launching back‑to‑back home runs from its first two batters to grab early momentum and put the Aggies on their heels. But sophomore right‑hander Sydney Lessentine responded with poise, settling in and preventing any further damage in the inning.
A&M answered immediately. In the bottom of the first, transfer infielder Michaela Wark delivered a two‑out, two‑run blast to left, tying the game and electrifying the home crowd. From there, however, scoring became scarce as both pitching staffs locked in.
The decisive moment came in the top of the fifth, when the Red Raiders capitalized on back‑to‑back defensive miscues that put a runner in scoring position. A well‑placed RBI double pushed across the go‑ahead run—Tech’s third and final tally of the night.
Despite the loss, it was a strong defensive showing overall for an A&M team still adjusting to numerous new positions across the field. Lessentine and the Aggie pitching staff held their own against one of the nation’s most explosive lineups, giving the team every chance to stay in it.

Offensively, though, the Aggies will need more production as they continue to sort out the right lineup combinations. With several spots still up for grabs, head coach Trisha Ford and her staff have decisions ahead as they work to find consistency at the plate.
