LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Balloons filled the sky Saturday night to honor a 19-year-old man who was killed in a motorcycle crash in central Lubbock last weekend.
Sean Canales and his girlfriend, 17-year-old Maizie Casares, were riding on the Marsha Sharp Freeway Sunday evening when they crashed into a guardrail. Canales died at the hospital. Casares was seriously injured when she was taken to UMC, but her condition has since been upgraded to critical.
Sean’s friends and family are using his death to push awareness of riders, saying they carry a bad reputation, but they also have families that they want to get home to.
“He had a passion for his motorcycle and as much as we parents don’t want our kids on these bikes, there is nothing we can do. Their mind is set on that motorcycle, wanting to get on that road. All we can do is just pray for them that once they leave that house, wherever they leave that they make it to their destination and come back home safe,” said Rose Canales.
Motorcyclists rode around the Hub City Saturday afternoon on the routes they say Sean used to ride. The Canales family is asking for everyone to keep Maizie in their prayers as she continues to recover.
