NORMAN, Okla. – UT Arlington men’s tennis wrapped up its weekend road trip Sunday, dropping its bout with the New Mexico Lobos 6-1. The Mavericks (0-5) will get a three-day reprieve before their first home match of the season.
UTA’s Court 1 duo of Axel Delva and Yazid Lahjomri won a hard-fought match in a tiebreaker against New Mexico’s Jan Skerbatis and Tyler Waddock, but the Lobos (3-5) narrowly won the Court 2 bout 7-5. UTA did not have a team for Court 3 and therefore had to forfeit the match and the doubles point to New Mexico.
In singles action, UTA also had to forfeit the Court 6 match without a player available. Novak Ivanovic won his second team singles point of the spring, defeating Skerbatis by retirement in the second set.Â
The Mavericks had a pair of close calls elsewhere in singles action. Delva won the first set of his Court 4 tilt against Waddock 6-4, but dropped the next two sets 6-2, 6-4. Saul Berdullas Calvino pushed New Mexico’s Phillip Bosin to the limit in their Court 2 bout, but came up just short in a 7-6 (7-2), 7-5 heartbreaker.
UTA is back in action against the Abilene Christian Wildcats at 1 p.m. Thursday at the UTA Tennis Center.
