History

LUBBOCK, Texas (February 8, 2026) — Lubbock Christian University got a strong starting pitching performance and broke the game open with a six-run fifth inning to secure a 12-4 victory over Sul Ross State University on Sunday at Hays Field, winning the series two games to one.

The Chaparrals (2-4, 2-4) took the lead in the third and scored in four different innings overall, cruising past the Lobos (1-5, 1-5), who hit just .219 in the series finale.

After using eight pitchers in Saturday’s slugfest, the Chaps needed starting pitcher Karson Dunn to eat some innings against the Lobos, and that’s exactly what he did. The right-hander set the tone with a strikeout to lead off the game and worked around a two-out walk to hang a zero to start the game. He followed it up with zeroes in the second and third, never allowing a Lobo past second base.

The Chaps gave him a lead to work with in the third inning with Tanner Pachorek hitting a double to left field to lead off. LCU followed with three straight bunts – a sacrifice from Dylan Marx and singles from Kyle Lewis and Hudson Grace – to plate the first run. Grace and Lewis then capitalized on stolen bases to advance, setting up Joe Mancinas for a two-RBI single through the right side, giving the Chaps a 3-0 lead after the third.

In the fifth inning, SRSU scored their only run off Dunn, which was unearned. The Chaps responded by extending their lead with a six-run outburst.

Marx and Lewis walked, and a wild pitch advanced them, setting up another RBI opportunity. Mancinas delivered with an infield single, scoring Marx. Aaron Morales added a sacrifice fly, bringing in Grace. Roe Forrest was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, allowing Mancinas to score. A balk scored Johnny Gomez III, and Pachorek doubled, driving in two more runs, pushing the lead to 9-1 through five innings.

Lewis scored again in the sixth after reaching on a walk and advancing on a single by Grace, giving the Chaparrals a 10-1 advantage. The seventh inning saw Saadiq McCain – making his first collegiate appearance – scoring from second base on a single by Ryan Gargett, extending the lead to 11-2.

The Lobos managed to score two runs in the eighth inning, narrowing the gap slightly, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Chaparrals’ lead. The Chaps secured the victory with an 11-4 final score, showcasing an efficient offensive and defensive performance.

Karson Dunn delivered a strong start for the Chaps, pitching six innings and allowing just three hits while striking out three. Dunn demonstrated effective control by inducing eight groundouts and managing to pick off two runners. Tate Thompson contributed an inning of relief, giving up one hit and no runs, while striking out one. Andrew Dalconzo allowed three earned runs in is two innings of relief, but also struck out a pair.

GAME NOTES:

– Mancinas had three hits in the win and hit .571 (8-14) on the weekend. He is now leading the team with a .478 batting average

– The Chaps hit four more doubles in the series finale, giving them 15 in the series overall. Their 20 total doubles are the second-most in the Lone Star Conference

– LCU’s pitching staff of Dunn, Dalconzo and Thompson limited the Lobos to just an .077 average with runners in scoring position. And their only hit in 13 chances did not drive in a run

– With no earned runs allowed in his six innings of work Dunn lowered his season ERA to 1.64, which is the lowest in the LSC among pitchers with at least 10.0 innings pitched

– Lewis scored three runs out of the leadoff spot. His 12 runs scored this season are tied for the third-most in the league
