Valentine’s Day in Lubbock just never seems to turn out as it does in the movies. There are no horse-drawn carriages, basically zero skyline, and seldom spontaneous jazz music. What we do have is effort, a little optimism, and a strong acceptance of “this is fine.” We are practical people, and that comes in especially handy on Valentine’s Day.

Here are some of the most Lubbock Valentine’s Day dates to ever exist.

You’re all dressed up, and you paid a little too much for the fancy V-Day menu. Now, the two of you are out of the romantic candlelight and comparing paper towel prices like a married couple. There’s romance in there somewhere. I’m just sure of it.

Sonic drinks in the car “to talk.”

Nothing says intimacy like parking your parents beat up mini van at Sonic, ordering two cherry limeades, and watching the condensation build up on the windows from all of the nervous mouth-breathing. Share some tots and pretend all of this was intentional.

“Let’s just drive around.”

No destination. No timeline. Just vibes on backroads. One of you will probably have to pee in the middle of nowhere, but that’s part of the allure of a good old-fashioned drive-around. Bonus points if you hold hands.

Target, but romantic.

You’ll walk every aisle and make jokes about everything from throw pillows to kids’ toys. You might consider buying some candles, but then suddenly remember you aren’t the type of person who spends $15 on candles. Much like the drive-around date, just hold hands, and it’ll all be fine.

Cooking at home because everywhere will be packed.

I’ll be doing this one with my lover boy. It sounds sweet until you realize you’ll be arguing over the dishes the following morning. Still, it’s a little better than waiting 2 hours for a table, PLUS, you can do the whole evening naked. That’s got to be worth some extra romance points.

Sitting in the driveway and chatting instead of going inside.

The date is technically over, but neither of you wants to break the moment, and nerves are all over the place. So, you sit there, sometimes in silence, reflecting on all the choices that led you to this disaster OR fantastic date. Hopefully the latter.

Lubbock Valentine’s Day dates aren’t flashy, but they sure are honest. Sometimes, that’s way more romantic than booking a reservation.
