CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The high school softball season is back across the Coastal Bend with local teams scoring some big wins Monday.
Gregory-Portland got out to an 8-0 lead then had to hold off a late King rally in a 12-7 win over the Mustangs at Cabaniss. G-P goes to 1-0 in the nine-team District 29-5A, which begins its games that count towards the standings right off the bat.
The Veterans Memorial Eagles put up a four-run first inning in an 18-3 run rule win over Ray. The Eagles also jumped out to the early district lead with the win.
The Santa Gertrudis Academy Lady Lions won a big state-ranked non-district match-up over visiting Weslaco 10-9 in nine innings down in Kingsville. The Lions were ranked #10 in Class 3A while the Panthers started the year ranked #15 in Class 6A.
