Chris Del Conte, has been pushing for a move to a nine-game SEC schedule since leading the Texas Longhorns into the league ahead of the 2024 football season. 

Starting in 2026, the school’s athletic director will get his wish.

The nine-game SEC slate for the Longhorns includes Tennessee, Oklahoma, Florida, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Missouri, LSU, Arkansas and Texas A&M. Before beginning conference action, Texas will host Texas State, Ohio State and UTSA.

Del Conte’s advocacy was based on a quirk in Texas’ schedule. Because the Longhorns play Oklahoma in Dallas every year, they’d end up with just three SEC home games every other season (including last year). Under the new format, Texas will always play four SEC home games and four SEC road games on top of the neutral-site matchup at the Cotton Bowl.

“It’s like Bengay or an atomic bomb, I’m applying constant heat on this particular subject with our friends at the SEC,” Del Conte said in 2024. 

Del Conte’s pressure worked. As a result, he’s also turned up the heat on his Longhorns.

At ESPN, Bill Connelly’s SP+ formula looks to use efficiency metrics to rank every team in college football. In 2025, Texas’ regular-season opponents ranked, on average, about 61st in the SP+ ratings. The teams on the Longhorns’ 2026 schedule finished 34th, on average, in the 2025 SP+. 

That’s a substantial jump. None of the College Football Playoff teams from 2025 played a schedule anywhere close to that tough. 

And a look at how the Texas football schedule is transforming validates the math. Last year, the Longhorns played three Group of Five teams in Sam Houston, San Jose State and UTEP that went a collective 7-29. One of those games is being replaced directly by an SEC team. 

Ohio State is still on the schedule in 2026, and Texas State and UTSA should both offer stiffer tests than last year’s cupcake batch. Both went 7-6 and won bowl games. The Roadrunners even clobbered Tulane, which went to the College Football Playoff.

What about the quality of the Longhorns’ SEC opposition?

In 2025, Texas’ SEC opponents won 3.88 league games, on average. That gave Texas the seventh-easiest slate in the 16-team conference, tied with Tennessee. The Longhorns’ 2026 conference opponents won 3.79 SEC games last year, which makes Texas’ SEC slate look marginally easier. 

But things change rapidly in the transfer portal era. Is LSU, for instance, likely to go 3-5 in the SEC again with Lane Kiffin in charge and college football’s top-ranked transfer portal class in tow? A similar argument can be made in the opposite direction against Ole Miss, which won seven SEC games last year, but lost Kiffin. Arkansas and Florida will also have first-year head coaches.

Then there’s the matter of location. Texas’ most difficult games last season, per SP+, were Ohio State and Georgia, both teams the Longhorns visited. This year, Texas will play three games against top-10 SP+ opposition from last year — two of which are at home. Ohio State and Ole Miss are both scheduled to visit Royal-Memorial Stadium, while the Longhorns will travel to play Texas A&M at Kyle Field. 

That’s a nice counterweight to a schedule that, as a whole, is likely to be more difficult. 

Del Conte’s next political endeavor, he said last week, is to see the College Football Playoff expanded, but it’s fixed at 12 teams for 2026. In two years under that format, the selection committee has not admitted an at-large team with more than two regular-season losses.

That means no additional breathing room for Texas. And the schedule is only getting tougher.
