  • October 22, 2025

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – Two architectural projects in Center City of Amarillo are finalists for the 2025 President’s Awards Program sponsored by Texas Downtown.

For more than 30 years, the awards program has recognized outstanding projects, places and people of downtowns across the state.

Center City of Amarillo nominated two downtown projects to compete for the honors.

This year’s finalists were announced in Austin.

The architect for the new Amarillo City Hall was Sims + Architects.

Sheila Sims, president of Sims + Architects, says the team’s mantra was respect, not restore. She says the style was industrial art deco.

The new Potter County Justice Center replaces a facility built 35 years ago. The building is located on Historic Route 66 in downtown Amarillo.

The new building is a five-story, 158,000 square foot courthouse with sheriff’s sally port accessible detention areas, courtrooms, jury assembly, courtroom in-custody holding, county offices and records storage.

Winners to be announced next month

Winners will be announced at the Texas Downtown Association Conference in Waco in November.

A news release says that as finalists, the Amarillo City Hall and the new Potter County Justice Building are eligible for the People’s Choice award.

“Center City competes in the 50,000 population and over category. These cities all entered great projects. We are so excited that both of our nominated projects are finalists,” said Beth Duke, Center City of Amarillo.
