LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – A Lubbock County sheriff’s deputy was involved in a low-speed collision with a bicycle near 34th Street and the Interstate Wednesday morning.
Around 10 a.m., the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office says a deputy was stopped at a red light on the southbound I-27 access road when the signal turned green. As the deputy began to accelerate a bicyclist crossed in front of his unmarked vehicle and did not stop.
LSO says the deputy’s front bumper struck the bicycle, knocking it over.
The bicyclist and their dog, who was riding in the basket, were both unharmed.
Following a review of the collision, the bicyclist was issued a citation.
LSO says while no one was injured in the crash, the department reminds all motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists the importance of obeying crosswalks and traffic signals when on roadways.
“If you are crossing a roadway on a bicycle or on foot, please use the provided crosswalks and look at the traffic signals,” LSO said. “Motorists are encouraged to exercise caution when accelerating from a stop to ensure the safety of all citizens.”
