According to the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened around 10:00 a.m. when the deputy, driving an unmarked patrol unit, was stopped at a red light. When the light turned green, the deputy began to accelerate from a complete stop. At that moment, a bicyclist crossed in front of the vehicle, and the deputy immediately applied the brakes.

Despite the quick reaction, the vehicle’s front bumper made contact with the bicycle, knocking it over. The cyclist and their small dog, Rusty—who was riding in a basket on the bike—were both unharmed. Emergency Medical Services were called to the scene as a precaution, but the bicyclist refused treatment. Authorities confirmed there was no visible damage to the bicycle.

Sheriff’s Office: “We’re Grateful No One Was Injured”

In a statement, the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office expressed relief that no one was injured but noted that the incident underscores a growing safety concern in Lubbock and across the state.

“This event highlights a trend we’re seeing more often—collisions involving pedestrians and bicyclists,” the statement read. “All parties on the road share the responsibility of obeying traffic signals and using designated crosswalks.”

Following a review of the incident, investigators issued a citation to the bicyclist for crossing against the light.

A Reminder for West Texas Drivers and Cyclists

While the collision was minor, officials hope it serves as a reminder for both motorists and cyclists around Lubbock to stay alert. Local intersections—especially those near major access roads like I-27—can pose added risks when visibility or timing leads to confusion.

Authorities encourage drivers to take an extra second before accelerating at green lights, and for cyclists to always use crosswalks and follow signals. With Lubbock seeing more cyclists and pedestrians than ever, a little extra caution can make a big difference.

Thankfully, everyone—including Rusty the dog (who we wish we had a picture of)—walked away safely this time. But it’s a clear reminder that staying alert keeps us all safer on the Hub City’s roads.
