The two co-founders of “Where Y’all At,” Erinn Knight and Brandon Boone, are inviting the community to its annual Black History Month event: “Auntie’s House – Yeehaw!” and joined Trevor Scott in the studio to share more.

“It started dating back to 1928 and the 1928 Plan; the black community is so spread out here. So it’s sometimes hard to find community,” said Boone, “We wanted to play our part in solving that problem. So ‘Where Y’all At?!’ was born. I message to help you find your people. And we do that in many ways. A cultural tour guide is what we call ourselves.”

“Yeehaw” is a can’t-miss gathering for anyone looking to celebrate Black History Month with a fun, welcoming vibe.

“So Auntie’s House is our cousin kickback that we hold every second Sunday in Austin at the Pershing,” said Knight, “You can bring your kids. We do line dances. We do all sorts of games. I teach a spades clinic at the beginning so people can learn how to play spades, and then we run a tournament. So it’s just a place for us to actually centralize the community that we’re trying to connect all over the city throughout each month.”

Knight explains what inspired this special edition of Auntie’s House. “We wanted to do something special to kind of fill in the gaps. In Texas, cowboy culture is huge. So we wanted to highlight the black history part of cowboy culture. We’re the original cowboys. The name came from us. It was meant as a derogatory term at first. And then, because we were so great at what we did, it became the thing. You wanted to be a cowboy. But, the history of cowboy culture is like, 1 in 4 cowboys in America were black.”
