Austin police on Wednesday identified a man who was hit by a vehicle over the weekend while riding a scooter through downtown Austin, and asked for the public’s help identifying the driver who fled the scene.
The incident occurred shortly before midnight on Saturday near the intersection of East 11th Street and San Jacinto Boulevard where officers responded to reports of a collision involving a vehicle and scooter. They found the scooter rider, identified as 33-year-old Khaled Saadeddine, suffering from life-threatening injuries. Saadeddine was taken to a local hospital, where he died on Sunday.
The vehicle that hit Saadeddine fled the scene. By Wednesday afternoon, Austin police had not arrested anyone in connection to the hit-and-run, and investigators had not identified the vehicle involved, the Austin Police Department said.
Police are offering a reward of up to $1,000 for tips leading to an arrest in the case. Anyone with information is asked to call the Police Department’s Vehicular Homicide Unit at 512-974-8111. Tipsters can also submit information anonymously to Capital Area Crime Stoppers at AustinCrimeStoppers.org or by calling 512-472-8477.
The fatal crash marks the 78th of the year in Austin, resulting in 82 total traffic deaths. Deadly scooter accidents are relatively rare in Austin, averaging about one a year, the American-Statesman previously reported. In July, a man was found dead after a presumed scooter accident near the University of Texas campus.
