Agrihoods are neighborhoods that combine housing with working farms.

AUSTIN, Texas — The City of Austin is exploring a new approach to housing and food production.

A new staff report from the city recommends Austin use existing development rules to create more agrihoods, which are neighborhoods that combine housing with working farms.

The concept is to preserve farmland, create more affordable housing and increase the city’s access to fresh food.

According to the report, the city’s land code as it’s currently written makes it difficult to build agrihood developments without a special planning process. The city currently has one agrihood community, Green Gate Farms, which is located in East Austin near Walter E. Long Park.

City leaders are now considering whether to make changes to the land code to make building agrihood developments easier. There is no timetable on when they could reach a decision.
