EL PASO, Tx., February 16, 2026: In a recent mailer, candidate for Justice of the Peace Precinct 5 and incumbent Lucilla “Lucy” Najera stated that she had been endorsed by the Tejano Democrats. Officials with the Paso del Norte Tejano Democrats told El Paso Herald Post that Najera “lied about the endorsement,” adding that she was not even on the voting list for the group because “she failed to show up” to the meeting where the group would be considering their endorsements.

In a letter to be delivered to Najera today, the Paso del Norte Tejano Democrats Chair, Raul H. Lerma demanded that Najera “cease and desist using our [Tejanos] logo on all your campaign materials.” Lerma adds that it came to the attention of the Tejanos that their logo “was inappropriately used” in her recent mailer.

Lerma goes on to add in the letter to Najera that the use of the group’s logo “is very misleading since, we [Tejanos] DID NOT endorse” her. The letter adds that they “expect an apology” from her,” and asks her to “take immediate action to correct this serious matter.” (emphasis in original)

The Tejanos endorsed her opponent, Jesus Olivas.

We reached out to Olivas for comment.

In a text message, Olivas said that “unfortunately Najera falsely claimed that she was endorsed by the PDN Tejano democrats.” He added that “truth be told, it was me, Jesus Olivas, who in fact proudly received the Tejanos endorsement.” Najera added that Najera’s mailer “brings to question what else has she been misleading or worse yet, intentionally lying about?” Olivas closed with “Najera lacks integrity.”

Lerma added in his letter that the Tejanos is “considering sending out” their “own mailer condemning this misleading information.” A member of the board who asked not to be quoted so that they could talk about internal deliberations said that a meeting is being held later today to “discuss sending a mailer to all registered Democrats in JP5 notifying them of Najera’s false deceitful mailer.”

We reached out to Najera’s campaign for comment. In an email Najera wrote “I did in fact receive the endorsement of the Tejano Democrats of El Paso, and I am grateful for their support.”

There are two Tejano groups in El Paso, the Paso del Norte Tejanos and the Tejano Democrats of El Paso. Najera’s mailer used the PDN Tejano’s logo.

Najera added in her response that “unfortunately, a mail piece included the logo of a different organization with a similar name,” adding that it “was an unintentional error in production, not a misrepresentation of support.” Najera wrote that “as soon as the mistake was brought to our attention, we took steps to correct it.”

Najera concluded with “I have always conducted my campaign with honesty, transparency, and respect for the organizations and voters in our community,” adding that “my focus remains on serving the people of Precinct 5 with fairness and integrity.”

Chris Acosta, a member of PDN Tejanos, in a telephone interview told us that it “is disingenuous to say that it was a mistake when her mailer includes the phrase ‘proudly endorsed by Paso del Norte Tejano Democrats’ in addition to the logo.”

Dr. Anna L. Perez, another member of the PDN Tejanos told us in an email that “it’s extremely disappointing that a person in office (Najera) would actually flat out lie about an endorsement, showing she is not ethical.” She added that “how can anyone vote for such a deceitful person.”

There are five candidates in the race for Justice of the Peace Precinct 5, including incumbent Najera. The other challengers are Eileen Marlin Castro, Jesus Olivas, Monica Teran and Dora Oaxaca Rivera.

Early voting begins tomorrow and ends on February 27. Election Day is March 3.
